Industry-specific insights

In a time of economic turbulence and rapid change, how are American workers really thinking about their benefits? Economist Enterprise, supported by Nuveen, surveyed over 2,000 full-time employees and spoke with benefits leaders across industries to understand what's driving decisions today - and what employers need to know to stay competitive tomorrow.

The findings reveal a workforce under pressure, making difficult trade-offs between security and advancement, borrowing from their futures to survive today, and struggling to navigate increasingly complex benefits decisions. This research uncovers three critical shifts reshaping the benefits landscape and offers actionable insights for employers ready to respond.

The Benefits 2.0 research program from Economist Enterprise, supported by Nuveen, analyzes emerging trends in employer-provided benefits. It combines insights from a survey of 2,000 U.S. workers with in-depth consultations with business leaders and benefits providers.

Learn about the 3 critical shifts reshaping employee benefits

6 in 10 workers would choose long-term job security over higher pay or better benefits.

Key finding 1

Workers are choosing stability over career advancement - and it's costing them

In an uncertain economy, Americans are clinging to job security like never before. Six in ten workers would choose long-term job security over higher pay or better benefits, and nearly 30% have stopped job searching altogether in the past five years due to fear of losing security. Rather than pursuing career growth, workers are prioritizing predictable benefits and stable employment, even when it means sacrificing higher pay or better opportunities.

This shift is most pronounced among younger workers, lower-income earners, and caregivers, creating a rigid labor market where those who need mobility most are staying put out of fear rather than satisfaction.

Key finding 2

Financial pressure is forcing workers to raid retirement savings and delay their futures

Americans aren't just struggling to save for retirement - they're actively depleting what they've already set aside. More than one-third have taken loans or hardship withdrawals from retirement accounts due to financial pressures, and nearly a third have reduced their retirement contributions. Rising inflation, caregiving burdens, and general economic uncertainty are driving workers to make choices they know will hurt them later, with many now forced to work years beyond when they'd hoped to stop.

The result? A generation approaching retirement unprepared, with workers tapping into 401(k)s just to cover living expenses today while their futures grow increasingly uncertain.

63% of workers rarely review or change their initial retirement choices.

Key finding 3

Workers think they understand their benefits - but most regret their choices

There's a dangerous disconnect in how employees perceive their benefits literacy. While 72% say they feel confident navigating their options, 61% admit to regretting past benefits decisions. The culprit? Overly complex information and a tendency to stick with defaults rather than actively choosing what's best. Roughly seven in ten workers view retirement planning as overly complicated or time-consuming, leading most to make initial choices and rarely review them again.

And workers want help from their employers. 38% prioritize dashboards that update automatically as their circumstances change, and 36% want real-time cost projections. But they're not getting the personalized, accessible support they need to make confident decisions.
