Building tomorrow's legacy
When John Nuveen underwrote his first bond in 1898, he wasn’t anticipating supply chains, artificial intelligence or electronically traded funds. But he did have a vision that his new company could finance projects that help communities build for the future.
More than 125 year later, this vision stretches from the Americas and Europe to the Middle East and Asia-Pacific, providing power to municipalities and new industries, connecting cities and countries through highway and bridges, and accelerating civic development that brings communities together, all while aiming to secure the retirements of millions of hard-working individuals around the world. And that work is far from done.
At Nuveen, we value every opportunity to carry that vision forward into the next century. We value our talented and dedicated professionals who make it happen, our clients who entrust us with their capital and financial goals, and the communities where we live, work and invest. And we do those things by working hard, working together and having fun.
That’s the Nuveen way, and as we grow our capabilities globally across asset classes both public and private and through sustainable investments in the future including infrastructure, real estate, farmland and renewable energy, we’re preparing both our clients and our firm for the future so we can continue the work that John Nuveen started more than a century ago.

Featured community partner
As a part of a three-year strategic partnership with City Year New York, Nuveen serves as team sponsor for Mosaic Preparatory Academy, supporting the East Harlem community by advancing educational equity and developing future leaders. The collaboration aligns with Nuveen’s focus on the lives of first-gen students, and also showcases Nuveen’s unwavering focus on affordable housing preservation in this and similar communities “beyond the four walls.”
The firm operates additional opportunities for employees to invest in the future; a few examples include:
- An associate-led community grant program
- Nuveen “Invest in the Future” scholarship
- Matching gifts program
Nuveen traces its history to 1898 when the company
began underwriting municipal bonds, Nuveen’s investment team (which is
inclusive of TIAA’s investment team) began managing assets on behalf of TIAA in
1918. TIAA acquired Nuveen in 2014, and shortly thereafter TIAA’s asset
management business was combined with Nuveen. Statements regarding Nuveen’s
history include TIAA’s history.
