About Valerie Grant
Valerie is a portfolio manager and managing director within Nuveen’s active equity group and is also responsible for helping the firm grow its responsible investing platform.
Prior to joining the firm, Valerie served as a senior portfolio manager of responsible investing at AllianceBernstein, overseeing Responsible U.S. Equities, a $1.2 billion ESG-focused large-cap U.S. equity portfolio and served on the firm’s proxy voting and governance committee. Previously, she held roles of increasing responsibility as a buy-side analyst at AllianceBernstein and worked in corporate development at Bristol-Myers Squibb. Early in her career Valerie worked at McKinsey & Company and Ben & Jerry’s Homemade, Inc., a pioneer in corporate social responsibility. From these experiences she gained an appreciation for evidence-based decision making and the benefits and risks of investing with a focus on profitability and social impact.
Valerie is a thought leader in the field of responsible investing and a life member of the Council on Foreign Relations. She frequently provides market commentary for CNBC, Bloomberg News and other media outlets on responsible investing and equity markets more broadly. Valerie has been a featured presenter at industry conferences, including those hosted by the CFA Society New York, CFA Society Ottawa, the KPMG Board Leadership Center, the Yale Initiative on Sustainable Finance, and the Harvard Business School Club of New York, among others. Valerie graduated with a B.S in Economics degree, with a concentration in finance, from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School, and an M.B.A. with high distinction from Harvard Business School. She also served as a Rotary International Ambassadorial Scholar at the University of Zimbabwe.
