Our investment process
At GreenWood, our team provides a distinctive set of skills to our institutional investors seeking a globally diverse investment strategy. Our approach both sustains the values of investing in timber and provides a more attractive forward-looking return opportunity.GreenWood is vertically integrated and provides investment management (acquisitions, accounting and administration, portfolio management and reporting) and timberland property management (e.g., establishing farms, conducting silvicultural activities, and coordinating harvest, transport and sale of the timber).
In nearly every case, GreenWood manages day-to-day operations of the timber investments. Asset-level GreenWood teams typically comprise field technicians and area supervisors, and local administrative and accounting support staff. GreenWood professionals supervise contractors’ activities (e.g., site preparation, planting, forest protection, pruning, and harvesting and transportation).
Our commitment to sustainability
GreenWood’s sustainability ethic reaches back to its 1998 founding, and both Nuveen and GreenWood share a commitment to sustainable forest management. Our timber practices, like our farmland practices, seek to conform to the UN-backed Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI) Farmland Guidelines, which Nuveen helped to develop and was among the first to sign in 2011. Aligned with these Guidelines, we have created 16 key performance indicators (KPIs) specifically for timber.
- Promoting environmental sustainability
- Respecting labor and human rights
- Respecting existing land and resource rights
- Upholding high business and ethical standards
- Reporting on activities and progress toward implementing and promoting the Guidelines
