Europe, 8 June 2026 — Nuveen, the $1.4 tn1 investment management arm of TIAA, today announced the expansion of its offering, providing broader access to an established U.S. quantitative small- and mid-cap equity strategy for European investors.
Already established in the United States with AUM above $4.5bn2 and a strong track record since inception in August 2016, the strategy is now available to investors across several European countries.
Pei Chen, Head of Equity Quantitative Strategies at Nuveen and award-winning3 portfolio manager with more than 35 years of industry experience, who serves as the lead portfolio manager of the strategy, commented: “Our U.S. Small-Mid Cap Equity Strategy is backed by a bespoke quantitative approach and an experienced team that seeks to deliver consistent returns,” she added, “recognized with Morningstar’s prestigious 5-star rating4, the strategy offers a compelling proposition for investors seeking a differentiated exposure to this part of the market.”
The strategy invests a minimum of 80% of its assets in equity securities of small- to mid-sized U.S. companies across a wide range of sectors, growth rates, and valuations, with the aim to provide long-term total return. Through a distinctive systematic, active management approach, the strategy seeks to outperform the Russell 2500 Index over a full market cycle.
A proprietary multi-factor stock selection model sets it apart from more traditional approaches. Rather than applying factors uniformly across the investment universe, the model segments securities into three risk categories, each with its own tailored set of signals to evaluate stocks’ alpha scores. The alpha estimated from this multi-factor model then feeds into portfolio construction, seeking to maximise returns while controlling risk.
“We’ve seen growing client demand for U.S. small- and mid-cap equities among European investors, with the industry experiencing positive net flows over the past twelve and eighteen months,” said Christina Volkmann, Head of Business Development DACH at Nuveen. “I am thrilled to bring this strategy to our European institutional and wealth clients as a core equity portfolio building block.”
The strategy launches with seed capital from a German single-family office.
