Adrian Banner

Adrian Banner

Adrian Banner, PhD, is chief executive officer and chief investment officer at Intech. Dr. Banner was named chief executive officer in November 2012 and concurrently is the firm’s chief investment officer, a position he has held since January 2012.

Dr. Banner joined Intech in August 2002 and since that time has been an integral part of the firm’s Princeton-based research team. In 2009, he was named the firm’s co-chief investment officer. Dr. Banner has extensive knowledge of Intech’s trading systems, optimization programs and research initiatives, both on an operational and theoretical basis and has held various roles as part of Intech’s Princeton research team prior to being named CIO and subsequently CEO.

Dr. Banner earned his Doctor of Philosophy in mathematics from Princeton University and his Master of Science and Bachelor of Science, also in mathematics, from the University of New South Wales, Australia. Dr. Banner has lectured on the stability of market capitalization and low-volatility equity portfolios at a number of academic and professional conferences and has authored several scholarly papers on Stochastic Portfolio Theory.

Vassilios Papathanakos, Ph.D.

Vassilios Papathanakos, Ph.D.

Vassilios Papathanakos, PhD, was named Intech’s deputy chief investment officer in November 2012 and executive vice president, deputy chief investment officer in 2014.

Prior to that, he was the firm’s director of research, based in Princeton, NJ. As deputy CIO, Dr. Papathanakos is jointly responsible, with Dr. Adrian Banner, Intech’s chief executive officer and chief investment officer, for the day-to-day implementation of Intech’s investment process and trading operations. Drs. Banner and Papathanakos have worked together during the past few years to implement Intech’s investment process, research, new products and enhancements to Intech’s process. They jointly manage Intech’s investment team.

Before joining Intech, Dr. Papathanakos received his Doctor of Philosophy in Physics from Princeton University in November 2006 and earned a Bachelor of Science in Physics from the University of Ioannina, Greece, in July 2001. Since joining Intech, Dr. Papathanakos has presented at a number of academic and professional conferences on the market capital and trading structure, as well as portfolio construction and analysis. He has also authored and collaborated on a number of academic and popularized papers on these topics.

Joseph Runnels

Joseph Runnels

Joseph Runnels, CFA, is vice president, quantitative trader at Intech. Mr. Runnels joined Intech in June 1998 from QED Information Systems, a software development company providing portfolio management and investment accounting systems. Mr. Runnels spent six years prior to that in portfolio management for the Tennessee Consolidated Retirement System in their fixed income investment division.

Mr. Runnels holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Murray State University and has earned the right to use the Chartered Financial Analyst designation.

Keith B. Hembre, CFA - Keith serves in strategic roles as chief economist, chief investment strategist and head of quantitative strategies for Nuveen Asset Management.

As chief economist, Keith’s research on global economies and financial markets provides the foundation for a broad segment of investment products at the firm. His monthly publication, Review and Outlook, delivers detailed forecasts for a number of macroeconomic data points – including gross domestic product growth, unemployment, Consumer Price Index, interest rates and corporate earnings – as well as for domestic and international equity and fixed income markets.

In his investment leadership roles, Keith leads the firm’s Quantitative Equity Strategy Team, which uses a top-down approach that incorporates macro, market and risk factors into sophisticated quantitative portfolio modeling techniques. This approach is instrumental in the management of the firm’s index, enhanced index, equity option overwrite, asset allocation and absolute return strategies.

Keith is a member of the American Bankers Association’s Economic Advisory Committee and an active commentator on economic issues. He is regularly quoted in major business publications, including The Wall Street Journal, BusinessWeek, CNN Money, Investor’s Business Daily and Reuters.

He has also appeared on a number of business programs for CNBC, Fox Business and Bloomberg TV. Keith has been recognized twice by BusinessWeek as one of the publication’s most accurate economic forecasters.

Before joining the firm in 1997, he worked in the Banking Studies group at the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis. He also taught economics at the St. Petersburg University of Economics and Finance in St. Petersburg, Russia. Keith began working in the financial services industry in 1992.

Keith graduated from the University of Minnesota with a bachelor’s degree and Baylor University with a master’s degree in economics. Keith also completed the program on investment decisions and behavioral finance at Harvard University. He holds the Chartered Financial Analyst designation and is a member of the CFA Institute.

David Friar

David Friar
David is the lead manager of the Equity Index, Mid Cap Index, Small Cap Index and Enhanced Equity Index Strategies and related institutional portfolios. He joined the team managing the Equity, Mid Cap and Small Cap Index Strategies in 2000 and became part of the Enhanced Equity Index Team in 2007. Additionally, he is a member of the investment team responsible for several other quantitative products, including the Tactical Market Opportunities and Equity Option Overwrite Strategies.

David began working in the financial industry in 1998 and joined the firm in 1999 as a member of the Performance Measurement Group. Before his role in portfolio management, he provided quantitative analysis for equity portfolios and constructed quantitatively driven portfolios for institutional and taxable clients.

David received a B.S. in finance from Metropolitan State University.
