Alibaba opens its first permanent store in Europe at the Xanadú shopping centre
AliExpress, the global retail online marketplace belonging to Chinese retailing giant Alibaba, opened its first, permanent, physical store in Europe on 25 August at the Xanadú shopping centre, Madrid, which is co-owned by Nuveen Real Estate, one of the largest investment managers in the world, and Intu.
The store is a collaboration between AliExpress and D.Phone, a major Chinese retailer of mobile phones and accessories. D.Phone serves as a strategic partner in operating the store and assisting AliExpress with commercial innovation.
The move underlines the importance of the Spanish market and the appeal of this leading European leisure destination.
Combining physical and online retailing, visitors to the AliExpress store at intu Xanadú can shop a range of technology and electronics products, including small appliances, household items and wearables.
Marta Cladera de Codina, Managing Director Nuveen Real Estate Iberia, said: “Having a cutting-edge operator like Aliexpress is a real success story for Xanadú. This announcement will see us take another step forward in delivering a comprehensive retail offering to Xanadú visitors, making for an increasingly pleasant shopping experience and visit.”
Opened in 2003, intu Xanadú (previously known as Madrid Xanadú) has formed part of Nuveen Real Estate's portfolio in the Iberian region since 2017. Spanning over 150,000 square metres and housing 220 stores, Spain’s only indoor ski slope and an aquarium, Xanadú welcomes over 13 million visitors per year.
