Alternative credit: perspectives on opportunities and risks

What’s driving institutions to private credit, real estate debt and CLOs?

Nuveen’s 2023 EQuilibrium survey found that over 80% of global institutional investors were planning to expand their reach for yield, and nearly half of those respondents were revisiting their traditional fixed income allocations. But exploring opportunities in traditional fixed income asset classes was not the only approach being pursued. Investing in alternative credit was selected as the next most popular course of action, including private credit, real estate debt and CLOs.

Nuveen experts discuss what’s driving demand in these sectors, how the current market environment is impacting performance and liquidity, and the opportunities and challenges for investors in alternative credit.

Investments will be subject to risks generally associated with the ownership of real estate-related assets and foreign investing, including changes in economic conditions, currency values, environmental risks, the cost of and ability to obtain insurance, and risks related to leasing of properties.

Responsible investing incorporates Environmental Social Governance (ESG) factors that may affect exposure to issuers, sectors, industries, limiting the type and number of investment opportunities available, which could result in excluding investments that perform well.
