“The modernisation helps us realign Gropius Passagen with present and future shopping centre requirements. As with the rest of our retail portfolio, we are committed to protecting and enhancing our assets for Tomorrow’s World. This site contains considerable potential and we intend to leverage it by remodelling the centre.”
Nuveen Real Estate and mfi Management für Immobilien AG started the revitalisation work at the Gropius Passagen shopping mall in Berlin in July 2014. Located in the borough of Neukölln and completed in the 1990s, the shopping centre will be radically modernised according to plans by the prestigious architectural team Saguez & Partner in Paris and Aukett und Heese in Berlin.
Within the first development phase, a new and modern fashion mall was created between the apparel stores of P&C and C&A on the ground floor. The mall is fully let to a variety of international fashion brands.
The plans also provide for the redevelopment of other sections of the shopping centre, which currently extends over a floor area of 93,500 sq m. The entrance areas, for instance, will be overhauled, the mall will be modernised with new floor coverings and a new lighting and ceiling concept, and the retail units – around 140 today – will be grouped into new, distinctly structured shopping zones. The architectonic theme guiding the structural alteration is “light and nature.”
