Philip C. Traven, CFA®

Portfolio Manager
Philip

About Philip C. Traven

Philip is a portfolio manager at Nuveen, responsible for managing taxable municipal fixed income strategies for customized institutional portfolios. Philip also manages the tax-exempt housing credit LP, and he applies municipal credit discipline across both public and private market structures, with a focus on tax-exempt real estate debt, securitized housing credit and institutional separate account mandates.

Philip joined the firm in 2010. Prior to his current role, he was a senior research analyst on Nuveen's municipal fixed income team. Philip was responsible for credit analysis across private placements and high yield sectors including land secured, real estate, project finance, industrial development bond, and student housing. He also covered tax-backed securities and public-private partnership projects.

Before focusing on municipal credit research and portfolio management, Philip supported the commercial finance businesses at Merrill Lynch Capital and RBS Asset Finance as a senior analyst. Prior experience in structured lending and commercial finance informs Philip's approach to credit-intensive strategies that span multiple stages of the investment lifecycle — from origination and loan pool warehousing through securitization and long-term portfolio management.

Philip graduated with a B.S. in Finance from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Gies College of Business. He holds the Chartered Financial Analyst® designation and is a member of the CFA Institute and the CFA Society of Chicago.
