Fund description

The Fund employs a passive management (or “indexing”) approach, investing primarily in large-capitalization U.S. equity securities that satisfy certain environmental, social and governance (“ESG”) criteria.

Index description

The TIAA ESG USA Large-Cap Index (the “Index”) is primarily composed of equity securities issued by large capitalization companies listed on U.S. exchanges. The Index uses a rules-based methodology that seeks to provide investment exposure that generally replicates that of large-cap benchmarks through a portfolio of securities that adhere to predetermined ESG, controversial business involvement and low-carbon screening criteria. The Index is rebalanced on a quarterly basis.  It is not possible to invest directly in an index.

Fund basics

Fund data

Performance

Average annual total returns

Past performance is no guarantee of future results. Investment returns and principal value will fluctuate so that shares redeemed may be worth more or less than their original cost. Current performance may be higher or lower than the performance shown. Total returns for a period of less than one year are cumulative. Returns assume reinvestment of dividends and capital gains. Market price returns are based on the closing market price.

Shares of ETFs are bought and sold at market price as opposed to net asset value. As a result, an investor may pay more than net asset value when buying and receive less than net asset value when selling. In addition, brokerage commissions will reduce returns. Fund shares are not individually redeemable directly with the Fund, but blocks of shares may be acquired from the Fund and tendered for redemption to the Fund by certain institutional investors in Creation Units.

* ETFs have generally low portfolio turnover and do not need to sell securities to meet shareholder redemptions, potentially reducing taxable gains.

A word on risk

Investing involves risk; principal loss is possible. There is no guarantee the Fund's investment objectives will be achieved. This ETF seeks to generally track the investment results of an index; however the Fund may underperform, outperform or be more volatile than the referenced index. In addition, because the Index selects securities for inclusion based on environmental, social, and governance (ESG) criteria, the Fund may forgo some market opportunities available to funds that don't use these criteria. The value of equity securities may decline significantly over short or extended periods of time. Because it invests primarily in large-capitalization stocks, the Fund may underperform funds that invest primarily in stocks of smaller capitalization companies during periods when the stocks of such companies are in favor. These and other risk considerations are described in detail in the Fund's prospectus.

TIAA ESG USA Large-Cap Index is a custom index that is owned and calculated by MSCI, is based on the MSCI USA Index and aims to increase exposure to positive environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors and exhibit lower carbon exposure as compared to the MSCI USA Index.

It is not possible to invest directly in an index.

The Morningstar RatingTM for funds, or "star rating", is calculated for managed products (including mutual funds, variable annuity and variable life subaccounts, exchange-traded funds, closed-end funds, and separate accounts) with at least a three-year history. Exchange-traded funds and open-ended mutual funds are considered a single population for comparative purposes. It is calculated based on a Morningstar Risk-Adjusted Return measure that accounts for variation in a managed product's monthly excess performance, placing more emphasis on downward variations and rewarding consistent performance. The top 10% of products in each product category receive 5 stars, the next 22.5% receive 4 stars, the next 35% receive 3 stars, the next 22.5% receive 2 stars, and the bottom 10% receive 1 star. The Overall Morningstar Rating for a managed product is derived from a weighted average of the performance figures associated with its three-, five-, and 10-year (if applicable) Morningstar Rating metrics. The weights are: 100% three-year rating for 36-59 months of total returns, 60% five-year rating/40% three-year rating for 60-119 months of total returns, and 50% 10-year rating/30% five-year rating/20% three-year rating for 120 or more months of total returns. While the 10-year overall star rating formula seems to give the most weight to the 10-year period, the most recent three-year period actually has the greatest impact because it is included in all three rating periods. ©2021 Morningstar, Inc.
