Business Resource Groups

Nuveen Business Resource Groups (BRGs) provide a platform for associates to unite and share cultural, social and gender-related identities and experiences. BRGs are an invaluable asset for employees looking to find camaraderie, spread awareness and strengthen professional networks across our organization. Our BRGs are open to anyone at Nuveen interested in learning about diversity dimensions — not just those who identify with a specific group's focus.

Inclusion & Diversity Council

In October 2020, Nuveen associates pressed the organization’s leadership to take action and address ID&E challenges in investment management. This open dialogue catalyzed the formation of the Nuveen Inclusion & Diversity Council, formalizing our firm commitment to lead change across the industry.

Beliefs and commitments

  1. Diverse portfolio management teams can achieve better outcomes for clients. We will work even harder to extend opportunities to under-represented groups and create new pipelines leading to investment roles.
  2. Diversity of thought and perspective can broaden communication and deepen connections with our partners. We are actively assessing opportunities to diversify our client and vendor interactions through commitments to diversity on panels, supplier diversity goals and vendor diversity expectations.  
  3. Action and modeled behavior from the top is essential for achieving inclusive and diverse culture. Nuveen’s executive leadership team is leveraging industry-leading equity metrics and analytics to drive decision making, while formally incorporating ID&E into enterprise-wide performance goals and by becoming Business Resource Group members, allies, sponsors and coaches.


Recruiting diverse talent

We’re increasing diversity across our firm through deliberate actions within early talent, mid-career and executive recruiting efforts. Our early talent rotational program attracts and develops talent through partnerships with organizations, youth education programs and diversity associations around the globe.

A driving force in our mid-career recruiting comes from Nuveen’s Roger W. Ferguson, Jr. MBA Fellowship Program . The fellowship partners with leading MBA programs and professional diversity development associations to provide an on-ramp for outstanding scholars from backgrounds that have been historically under-represented in the financial services industry.

Our executive recruiting efforts focus on networking and speaking engagements through partnerships with professional societies and organizations. We are also involved in Nuveen’s industry-influencing LEAD events, as well as many networking programs that we host and co-host with our partners to seek out executive-level leaders.

We pioneered responsible investing over 50 years ago  with our advocacy for social responsibility during the apartheid era. Now, we continue to evolve our responsible investing legacy as our ID&E efforts drive our investments and how we manage portfolios.

Be the change

Launched in the summer of 2020, Be the Change is our organizational platform calling for a sustained focus on social justice. Starting with our leadership, we’ve encouraged every associate across the enterprise to take action against racial injustice and to support communities in need. Associate participation has been unprecedented, coming to life through our enterprise-wide Race Against Racism, our Summer of Service community digital access engagement program for those in need, and through other tutoring and volunteer opportunities.

Equity Collective

We’re a founding member of Morgan Stanley’s Equity Collective Initiative, an industry leading group of investment managers who’ve joined forces to educate, empower and develop the next generation of diverse leaders in the financial services industry. Through this multi-year commitment, we’re actively engaging with Boys and Girls Club of America and Team IMPACT , two nonprofit organizations that work with underserved minority youth and young adults across the U.S. on career readiness and leadership skills.

Project Destined

We’ve partnered with Project Destined , a national social impact platform providing knowledge and skills to high school students from underserved communities who aspire to pursue careers in real estate. By focusing on business education and skill development, the partnership gives students access to the experience and expertise of Nuveen’s real estate investment professionals as they explore pathways to future careers.
